'Man with a Cane'  oil on canvas - 2017 - 40wX50.25h"

there was a man

with a limp and

a cane fixed

street bound

he gave off enormity

though it may have been

he was slight in many fashions

I could not tell

and do not remember

I watched him to see

if I could find him

as he walked alone

street down

not wanting to go

but going

not prideful

but proud

we need a word for dignity

that fails as it succeeds

as if by the length of its assertion

like a habit

I thought then

holding what we

find we shape

by our shaping

and the world closed

into the mundane
